Chronic Back Pain. No End in Sight

By fioricetultram

Chronic back pain is pain that generally lasts longer than 3 months. Like any long lasting pain, it can interfere with normal daily functioning and create emotional and psychological, as well as, physical problems. There can be a fine line distinction between recurring and chronic pain, when the incidences of pain come close together over a long period of time. No matter how the pain is defined, it’s important to deal with all of the contributors to chronic back pain.

Medical science has slowly been coming to the conclusion that controlling pain for some people is as much as about controlling the pain center responses in the brain as it is to fixing the physical cause of the pain. In other words, you may have a physical reason for the chronic back pain, but the pain can be much worse due to psychological factors such as stress or worry. You can also increase your back pain by reducing your physical activity in response to the pain, resulting in an increasing deteriorating physical condition.

There are many approaches that can be taken to deal with chronic back pain. A doctor can prescribe medicine that blocks the pain response in the brain. Surgery is sometimes suggested, though it’s seldom the first choice. Often, the best way to deal with back pain is by increasing physical activity on a planned schedule.

All too often, people with back pain quit doing certain activities because of the pain. As a result, the muscles in the back weaken and are not exercised regularly. This can create even more pain as the spinal column fails to get adequate muscular support. Many people believe the only way to deal with chronic back pain is to take medicine, but that should be only one option you consider. Chronic back pain can often be temporarily lessoned with simple measure like ice or hot packs and massage. But when these fail, there are other alternatives.

* Trigger point injections of an anesthetic into the muscle area causing the most pain

* Minor surgery to implant electrodes along the spine to block pain signals from the brain (called spinal column stimulation)

* Spinal epidural which deadens the area on the spine where the pain is emanating

* Major surgery which such as a spinal fusion

Most of time some form of medication will be tried before deciding to have surgery. Surgery is the last resort, because it’s the most invasive. Also, since the source of a lot of back pain can’t be pinpointed, surgery becomes more exploratory than curing. Medications used to deal with chronic back pain include painkillers, anti-inflammatory medication, muscle relaxants and sedatives or anti-depressants. Since the feeling of pain starts in the brain, some drugs intended to calm a person mentally can sometimes result in less pain due to the changes they bring to brain chemicals.

As you can see, there are many alternatives to deal with chronic back pain. They range from temporary relief enabling you to handle a bout of long term recurring pain to invasive solutions.

Information you Need to Know About Tension Headaches

By fioricetultram

Exactly as they sound, tension headaches are brought on by stress. Tension headaches are the most common forms of headaches suffered by both men and women. Sometime in their lives individuals will suffer from at least one tension headache.

There are still some unanswered questions as to why tension headaches occur. It is believed that the source of the pain may be when the muscles in the head and neck constrict. Although other researchers believer there is additional sources of tension headaches and that there isn’t a single trigger from the headaches. Some tests have shown that tension headaches may be caused by the wrong signals being sent to the brain. It is believed that a message of pain is wrongly sent to the brain when the muscles tense. This is why it is believed antidepressants are successful in treating tension headaches. Grinding teeth is another reason some think tension headaches occur. They believe those who are more likely to suffer from tension headaches are those who grind their teeth since this aggravates specific muscles in the head.

Unlike migraines which have pain on only one side of the head, tension headaches typically have pain across the entire front of the forehead. Tension headaches can be moderately bad, but they are often only light headaches. It is uncommon, but some people will have severe tension headaches which have intense pain. Tension headaches are not made worse by physical activity. Tension headaches occur less often or episodic and there are often periods of time in which suffers don’t get tension headaches. Although tension headaches can also be chronic in which they can occur at least fifteen times in a four week period and can continue for up to six months. Tension headaches can last for either a few minutes or up to a few hours.

There are two things you can do if you suffer from tension headaches. You can gain temporary relief by taking over the counter pain medications. The second option is to find something that will ease your tension headaches. Taking yoga classes and learning to meditate has helped some people with their tension headaches since it is a good way to ease tension. Another relaxing option is to get a professional massage. Acupuncture can also help since this has been proven to have good pain relief outcomes. Physical exercise is a good option for letting out tension so you could try joining a gym. If you have excessive tension in your life then you may need to make serious life changes. Some of these changes can be difficult such as employment or relationship changes. Although once you make these difficult changes you won’t have to deal with constant pain from tension headaches. If you still can’t get rid of tension headaches it is important to know that they aren’t dangerous and you can live with them.

By fioricetultram

Did you know that over 75 million people in the USA alone have some sore of chronic pain and reoccurring pain. Pain is one of the major causes of employees missing work and disability. I really hate to see people in pain. Please keep in mind, that I am not a physician or have any experience in pain, pain management or physical therapy. I just think, that instead of just treating the pain area, that some more effort should go into locating the real source of the pain. This just seems to me to be an efficient way of locating the cause of the pain.

a) Find out where the pain is really coming from by determining if the pain is caused by the area where the pain is located or if it is caused by the nervous system.

b) If the pain is coming from the pain area, find out which activities are causing the most pain by having your patient list every activity that causes their pain and next to each activity put a number next to the activity that would rate the extent of the pain.

c) Create a Rating list for the physician and the client. So both can refer to them as they do that activity and as treatment is provided to see if the rating has improved or not.

d) Re rate the pain after the number of visits that the physician determines improvement should be noted.

I realize that this doesn’t stop the pain but finding the cause instead of just treating the pain maybe a step in the right direction. In the meantime the gels listed above and more can be purchased from the GNRCatalog.com site by health care professionals or for the end user you can go to SelfCareCentral.com. I would like to hear from anyone their thoughts, ideas, solutions and/or remedies for Low back Pain, pain management.

What is counterintuitive about pain?

By fioricetultram

Whoever you ask, they will all tell you the same thing. Everyone knows pain is a warning signal. It’s telling you there’s something wrong with your body and you should get it fixed. That’s conventional wisdom and it’s right. Except, what are you supposed to do when you have received the message and have done what you can to treat the cause? You no longer need the warning message. But you can’t just switch it off. It’s not like an alarm that goes off when you have a break-in at your home. The burglar runs off. You’re safe again. You switch off the alarm. With pain, you have to decide how you’re going to respond. Some people decide that changing their lifestyle to slow down, to become more inactive, keeps the level of pain down. Go back twenty years and the medical profession would have been advising rest. Now, research has proved the opposite to be the better approach. The new wisdom is that slowing down contributes to chronic pain. Today’s message is that exercise is good for you even if you feel pain when you do it. This seems counterintuitive. Why does it work? The reasons flow from inactivity. If you do little more than sit and eat, your muscles lose their tone and cholesterol levels rise putting diabetes into your risk profile. Blood pressure also rises and, unless you do something, there can be a stroke or heart attack. Inactivity means it’s harder to maintain a regular sleep cycle. Stress and anxiety levels increase and a depression can form. But start an exercise program devised by your physician and the opposite is true. Your general strength and energy levels improve. Burning off unwanted calories improves your weight which takes some of the pressure off your joints. Now work through stretching and other exercises to improve flexibility and your cartilage problems are eased. This is not going to be easy. But if you build up activity levels slowly, this gives your body a chance to adjust. Using a good painkiller like tramadol will also give you a breathing space if your body protests too much. It’s worth repeating the need to get an exercise program designed for your particular health problems. You need exercise targeted on improving performance in the areas most affected by injury or disease. Throughout, using tramadol will help keep the pain within reasonable limits but, as time passes, the need to rely on an analgesic should slowly recede. Buy tramadol and use it sparingly. Just as you should not give into the pain, you should also avoid any risk of dependence on a painkiller.

What you Need to Know about Fioricet

By fioricetultram

Fioricet is a prescription drug which is used to relieve headaches that are caused by contraction of muscles in the neck, head and areas around the shoulder. This relaxant and pain reliever is a strong, non-narcotic drug that contains butalbital, acetaminophen and caffeine. The acetaminophen relieves pain and reduces fever; the butalbital relaxes contracting muscles that can cause headaches while the caffeine which stimulates the nervous system also relaxes the contracting muscles that are in the blood vessels to enhance the flow of blood.

Users can get mentally or physically dependent on this drug because of its butalbital component. This is common in instances where the drug is taken in doses that are higher than the recommended ones after a long period of time.

When taking fioricet you should avoid taking more than what the doctor prescribes for you. When you forget to take a dose, you should make sure that you take it immediately you remember. A missed dose can be skipped if you remember when it is time for your next one. Two doses of this drug should never be taken at the same time. Fioricet should be stored in a container that is light resistant at room temperature.

It is not possible to anticipate side effects therefore if you get any while taking fioricet or they become intense, you should inform your physician immediately. This is important so that the doctor can determine whether you should continue taking the prescription. Some of the common side effects that are associated with fioricet include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and shortness of breath, drowsiness, dizziness, abdominal pain and a feeling of intoxication.

If you are allergic to caffeine, acetaminophen or barbiturates, it is advisable that you avoid this medication. Inform the doctor about any reactions that you have before you get the prescription. Those who have porphyria which is a metabolic disorder that is inherited and affects the liver or the bone marrow should avoid fioricet unless advised to take it by a doctor.

This drug should not be taken if you are going to participate in activities that require you to be fully alert mentally. This is because this drug can make you drowsy or less alert when driving or when you are operating heavy machinery. If you have severe depression or have a history of this condition you should inform your doctor.  Users who are elderly, weak, have kidney or liver problems or those with severe problems with their abdomens should take caution when using the drug.
