Common Medications for Dental Pain (Part 2)
By fioricetultram
, nonnarcotic drugs against pain for dental pain are discussed. Dentists use these medications to relieve mild to moderate oral pain. This article describes the narcotic medications. For moderate to severe dental pain, medications are typical:
•Tramadol (Ultram), 50 mg every 6 hours as needed for pain.
• Tramadol with acetaminophen (Ultracet, containing 37.5 mg of tramadol hydrochloride and 325 mg of acetaminophen), a table every 6 hours as needed for pain.
• Acetaminophen (Tylenol # 4, containing 60 mg of codeine phosphate and 300 mg of acetaminophen), a table every 4-6 hours as needed for pain.
For pain, opioid combinations are advised. For example, one Vicodin ES (10 mg 750 mg hydrocodone and acetaminophen) may be taken every 4-6 hours as needed for pain.
Opioids: Opioids are narcotic agents that act on the central nervous system. Side effects, including nausea, constipation, dizziness, sedation and respiratory depression, are common with opioid therapy. However, the relative risk of side effects opioidlike varies.
Although opioids as a class are effective for relieving dental pain, some commonly used formulas show poor efficacy for dental pain. Other drugs with fewer serious side effects can have similar results. For example, codeine alone has not been found as effective as other analgesics (acetaminophen and NSAIDs) for relief of dental pain. Oxycodone, hydrocodone and propoxyphene are about as effective as codeine. Dihydrocodeine, penta-and zocine meperidine show no advantages over codeine orally and may even be less effective. Their effectiveness in combination (combining opiods with acetaminophen and NSADs) is better than monotherapy.
Tramadol: Tramadol is a synthetic, centrally acting pain reliever. It is indicated for moderate to moderately severe oral pain. Its analgesic action affects both opioid receptor and serotonin uptake. This suggests that the effect of tramadol is not mainly through narcotic mechanism. Tramadol, a nonscheduled drug. Serious side effects generally associated with opioids, such as dependence, sedation, respiratory depression and constipation, are less often with this medication. Tramadol has a low rate of abuse, about one per 100,000 persons. The side effects commonly seen with tramadol include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness and fatigue.
Tramadol in the absence of sedation is particularly important for the day of dental surgery. Tramadol does not have the same side effects as traditional NSAIDs or opioids. Side effects are usually mild and transient. Importantly, tramadol does not have the ceiling dose effect common to many other analgesics. Recent studies show that tramadol is a good and post-dental pain killer. They also show that tramadol has a dose-response. For example, in one study they reviewed, tramadol 200 mg was more effective than 100 mg after third molar extraction. Unlike aspirin and acetaminophen with codeine, a pain that lasts for about four hours, tramadol provides analgesia for five to six hours after dental surgery.
Benzodiazepines are increasingly being used to reduce patient anxiety. Their sedative, “the reduction of anxiety” and “memory” properties, with their mild respiratory depression, are particularly useful for reducing the “view” of dental pain. By reducing the fear of dental treatment, the patient becomes less sensitive to painful stimuli.
Midazolam: Midazolam has the ability to decrease postoperative anxiety. It provides surgical amnesia (memory blockage) that lasts approximately 25 minutes. A multidrug combination of fentanyl, midazolam and metho-hexital (commonly used in intraveous sedation for wisdom teeth removal) gives better pain control but produced deeper sedation.
Treatment of anxiety related to dental procedures is most useful for children. Extreme preoperative apprehension May need more anesthesia and lead to postoperative negative effects. Oral midazolam has been shown significantly to the amnesia of the child when it is given10 minutes before surgery. Recent clinical trials of oral tramadol mixed with midazolam provides effective pain relief during and after surgery for children.
Diazepam: Diazepam is another useful benzodiazepine that treats oral pain associated with muscle spasms. However, its use is limited by the long-term sedation, the potential for abuse and dependence potential. Diazepam May have additive effects with other central nervous system depressants. Combinations of benzodiazepines and opioids are used widely for conscious sedation but are associated with significant risks. These combinations May be used under adequate cardiopulmonary monitoring.

How You Can Stop Pain With Natural Products
By fioricetultram
There are many old remedies – some call them “Old Wives Tales” – that can help relieve pain. You can often stop pain with these natural products faster and better than the traditional “pop a pill” method. Let’s take a look at some of these
Water, Water, Everywhere…
Water can do many things. Many studies show that headaches are often caused by a lack of adequate water in the body. Hence, the dehydration you have causes pain in your head – a headache. If you drink some water, even just a glass or two, it can help relieve the pain. Some people prefer using Gatorade and say it works just as well, so that is worth trying, too. Stopping pain with this natural product may seem almost miraculous!
Water can also be used in conjunction with epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) to soothe the body when there are aches and pains or even swelling with arthritis. The magnesium can be absorbed through the skin while soaking in hot water. (Fill the tub with very hot water – not scalding, but as hot as you can take otherwise – and add two cups of epsom salts. Add water as needed to keep at least very warm, aiming for about a thirty minute soak. The heat helps increase circulation and reduce swelling to the stressed body. If you stop pain with this natural product, there are many benefits. Magnesium is known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties. Though it is an essential mineral, many times it is deficient in our body.
If you have a sore throat, try gargling with a warm salt-water concoction. Use a glass of warm water, add a teaspoon of salt, stir to mix and dissolve the salt, and it is ready. Gargle with it as far to the back in the throat as possible, spitting it down in the sink as you need more air. Try to finish the glass of salt water, though it will be quite a few mouthfuls. With this natural product, you can stop pain in your throat.
What about once you’ve got a full-blown cold? There are natural products with which you can stop pain and infection. Adding lemon and honey to water, you can make a lemon and honey drink that will soothe the body and help you feel better. Heat some water on the stove. It needs to be hot, but you should still be able to drink it without getting burned. Add a teaspoon or so of honey and the juice of a lemon. The honey’s purpose is to counteract the lemon, so don’t go overboard. Mix it all together and sip it, enjoying its soothing properties as it slides down your throat.
If the cold really has you in its grip, try a garlic drink. Our grandparents knew of the healing properties of garlic and used it in many foods and healing drinks. To make it, heat water. Use very warm water, the juice of a lemon, a bit of honey to sweeten the lemon flavoring and make the drink palatable, and add the minced clove of garlic. The garlic will help the body fight the infection and the lemon and honey and warm water help you feel better, pronto.

Exercises To Stop Back Pain Now
By fioricetultram
Your back hurts. It hurts a lot. You ask, “What are the exercises to stop the back pain now?” or you plead, “Give me information on back pain exercise!”
Surprisingly, too much rest during an encounter of back pain will often make the condition worse. A day or two of rest should be followed by specific back pain exercise for complete recovery.
How Can Exercise Stop Back Pain?
Careful, thoughtful back pain exercise will help distribute nutrients up and down your spinal column, feeding your muscles, ligaments, nerves, and joints. Specific back pain exercise will stretch you back, making it supple. Other back pain exercise will strengthen your back, and make it strong. Weakness and stiffness, increased by rest, can be overcome by back pain exercise.
Exercises to stop the back pain now will also prevent future back pain, since you will be increasing your back’s ability to handle extra stress or injury.
CHOOSE EXERCISE, NOT REST, TO STOP BACK PAIN NOW
Before you begin back pain exercise, check with your health care provider. Not every back pain exercise will be right for you. If your injury is severe, a spine care specialist will recommend specific exercise techniques to meet your need. Your back pain exercise program should work the entire body, even though your primary target is the back.
What Are the Exercises to Stop Back Pain Now?
Once you decide that back pain exercise is essential, you will want to choose appropriate exercises. We recommend a doctor’s advice, and suggest that you show your doctor these possibilities.
1. Back Pain Exercises – Stretching
Stretching muscles, ligaments and tendons is essential for back health. Whether or not you are currently experiencing back pain, regular stretching of the back will give strength to overcome or prevent injury and trauma to the back. If yours is chronic back pain, plan on regular, daily stretching for as much as six months to give your back the flexibility and strength it needs. You may want to schedule more than one stretching session per day, but work carefully. Eventually, you will find that back pain exercise keeps back pain from recurring.
Set goals (expectations with due dates) for each muscle group. Decide a date by which you want each of these muscle groups to be strong. Write down each date, and determine to meet it.
Warm Up First for Safe, Efficient Back Pain Exercise!!
If there is any pain, stop or take it more slowly.
Cool down after your back pain exercise.
* Gluteus muscles. The muscles in your buttocks support flexibility in your hips as well as your pelvis. Back pain exercise should include these muscles daily.
The gluteus stretch. Sit in a straight back or folding chair. Move your bottom only forward several inches from the chair back. In that position, lightly press your feet against the floor. Now squeeze your gluteus muscles together, and hold for 5 minutes. This stretch allows you to get back pain exercise while watching TV.
* Hamstrings. Located in the back of each leg, your hamstrings help give you correct posture.
The hamstring stretch. Place one foot on a chair, keeping the other leg straight. Bend over until your chest touches the knee of the foot on the chair. Keep your chest on the elevated leg as you slowly back the other leg away from the chair. Hold your stretch for 20 to 30 seconds. This stretch gives good back pain exercise without equipment.
* Piriformis. The piriformis syndrome is caused by the piriformis muscle irritating the sciatic nerve. You feel pain in the buttocks, and referred pain from the back of your thigh to the base of the spine. Many people call this lower back pain “sciatica”.
The piriformis stretch. Lie on your back, right hip and knee flexed. Grasp your right knee with your left hand, and pull the knee towards your left shoulder. In this position, grasp just above the right ankle with the right hand, and rotate the ankle outwards. Repeat with your left side. You might want to do this back pain exercise with gentle music.
* Psoas Major. Lower back mobility can be greatly limited by a tight Psoas Major. This muscle often causes back pain that makes it difficult to kneel on both knees, or to stand for extended periods.
The Psoas Major stretch. Kneel on your right knee, left foot flat on the floor, left knee bent. Rotate the right leg outward. Place your hand on the right gluteus muscle and tighten the muscle. Lean forward through your hip, careful not to bend the lower spine. You should feel the stretch in the front of your right hip. Hold for about 30 seconds. Repeat with your left leg. If you have young children, include them in your back pain exercise.
2. Back Pain Exercises – Strengthening
Back pain can be stopped now, and greatly avoided in the future, by decreasing lower back stress. These exercises develop critical muscles in the abdomen, lower back, and gluteus. Both of these back pain exercises are learned better when working with a trained physical therapist, but if you are careful, you can learn them alone. Although you may do daily stretching back pain exercises, it is important to take a few days off each week from strengthening back pain exercises.
Lower Back strengthening. Begin by lying flat on your back on the floor. Do not push your back down on the floor. Bend both knees. Pull your navel (belly button) in toward your back while keeping your back relaxed. As you breathe out, stretch your arms upward as though you are reaching for an overhead chandelier. Gradually raise head and shoulders from the floor until your shoulder blades are barely touching the floor. Hold the position one to two seconds. Repeat 8 to 12 times. If you feel pain with this back pain exercise, stop or try to do it more gently and slowly.
3. Back and Leg strengthening. This is one of the McKenzie Exercises, named after a New Zealand physical therapist. Lie on your stomach, and push up off the floor with both hands, raising only your chest. Keep your pelvis flat on the floor. Raise your back to a comfortable stretch and hold for 8 to 10 seconds. Repeat 8 to 12 times. You should feel no pain with this back pain exercise, only a pulling up of the spine.
It is strongly suggested that any back pain exercise be done only after seeking professional medical advice.

Dealing with Fibromyalgia – The Wise Woman Way
By fioricetultram
“Dear woman,” the voice of Grandmother Growth seems to float in the deepening twilight, echoing, reverberating, ringing in the ears. “Bring me your pain. Bring me your pain. Bring your pain to me. Bring your burdens. Bring all that you can no longer bear, can no longer bear, can no longer carry, can no longer bear, can no longer be responsible for. Give it to me. Put it on. Let us pass in council together and listen to the stories your pain tells. Menopause is a journey that requires you to travel light. Heavy things – bitterness, regret, vengeance, clinging to pain – will make your tiring journey you down. Take only the stories. Leave the rest behind. Burning pain in your hot flashes. Let it leave you. This is change. Let it change you, dear wife, let it change you. “
Step 0: Do nothing
Dealing with fibromyalgia, women have less pain if they sleep in a dark room. If not possible, wear a sleep mask.
Step 1: Collect Information
Disorder in chronic pain I have called “all the ills on” when I wrote this article ten years ago, is now big news. Ninety percent of the 4 million Americans with this debilitating, frustrating condition – known as fibromyalgia – are white women, and many of them are postmenopausal.
Neither the cause nor cure for fibromyalgia is known. This is not a disease but a set of symptoms characterized by chronic widespread pain on both sides of the body, above and below the waist. (As one of my apprentices, said: “But I am not wrong in all these places at once. The pain moves. I never know where it will be next.”) Some women have a low fever in addition to pain. More than half of those who suffer from fibromyalgia also headaches, endometriosis, and / or irritable bowel syndrome.
The symptoms of fibromyalgia are quite variable, making diagnosis difficult. (Orthodox diagnosis is based on research of pain in trigger points). Fibromyalgia mimics aspects of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, hepatitis C, hypothyroidism, lupus, polymyalgia rheumatica, and early dementia. Many women with fibromyalgia, it is said, their distress is “all in your mind.”
It is not in your mind (alone). Menopause can leave the impression that you were beaten. Muscles respond to hormonal changes and feeling painful mood. Loss of sleep can make you pain. (Non-restorative sleep is a hallmark of fibromyalgia.) Lack of calcium (and other minerals) can make your bones pain. Whether you are facing these challenges, or the greater problem of fibromyalgia, why not give Wise Woman Ways a try? The remedies mentioned here have been remarkably successful in helping many women.
“People with fibromyalgia are not only sensitive to pain, but also find noises, strong smells, and aversion to light.” – Daniel Clauw, MD, director: chronic pain and fatigue Research Center, Georgetown University
Step 2: Engage the Energy
* Having a support group is one of the most important factors keeping fibromyalgia under control.
* Homeopathic Arnica is an amazing remedy for sore throat and muscle aches. Daily use of homeopathic Rhus Toxicodendron reduced pain by 25 percent in those with fibromyalgia.
* Make a list of things you have angina (anger, angry) about. Where do these things live in your body? With the help of an expert bodywork, loosen the scene. Women with fibromyalgia are very likely to be survivors of trauma (sexual assault or domestic violence, alcoholism).
* Return to your Mother. Floating in the ocean. Lie belly down on the earth. Naked. Let yourself ease. Let it heal you.
* Listen to a relaxation tape. Ask someone to show you how to do the yoga position called the “Corpse Pose”. Learn to put yourself in a deep state of mind calm and peaceful.
* Hypnotherapy can help you acquire a certain degree of mental control over their symptoms. Behavior of cognitive therapy is also useful.
Step 3: Nourish and Tonify
* The use of feed infusions, especially comfrey leaf and stinging nettle, instead of coffee, tea, soft drinks and is the only thing I know to effectively mitigate and overcome fibromyalgia.
* Gentle exercise – walking, yoga or tai chi practices – keeps muscles from weakening and increasingly painful. Experts suggest starting with as little as three minutes a day, and the gradual establishment of at least four sessions of five minutes each per day. Still, the reward is worth it.
* Regular consumption of yogurt also proves very useful for those who have fibromyalgia. Perhaps it is because yogurt to enhance the ability to feed and immunity, some suspect fibromyalgia is the result of a malfunction of the immune system.
* Magnesium is an essential nutrient for preventing pain in muscles and connective tissues. Legumes, whole grains, vegetables and feed the infusions – like nettle and Oatstraw – are the best sources.
* Moxibustion is also known as acupuncture without needles. Safe and easy to do at home by yourself, moxibustion gives fast relief from sore joints and aching muscles. It not only relieves pain but strengthens, the decrease in the future pain and gradually make a “cure”. You can buy a moxa “cigar” at a pharmacy or health food Oriental. Bring the glowing end of the moxa (after lighting it) near the painful area and move in small slow spirals until the heat becomes too intense. (This May take several minutes or more). Pain relief is usually immediate and often lasts for twelve hours or more.
Step 4: Stimulate / sedation
* Tinctures of willow bark or spirea (1-2 dropperfuls/1-2 ml is a dose) is strongly recommended that the green allies by women dealing with fibromyalgia.
* St. Joan’s wort tincture – not capsules, not the tea – is a powerful ally for women with fibromyalgia. He is one of the best muscle relaxants I have ever used. A 25-30 drop dose not only stops but also prevents muscle aches. I have used it as often as every twenty minutes (ten doses) when the occasion necessitated. St. Joan’s wort prevents pain when taken after exercise, and even better if taken before. I take a dose every hour while on an airplane to prevent muscle aches and jetlag.
* Regular massage from an experienced therapist stimulates the circulation of blood and energy, relieves pain, reduces fatigue and promotes rigidity. Avoid deep tissue massage, it increases the pain. The light and mild strokes Myofascial Release are most useful. Chiropractic manipulations are of little benefit.
* Massage with heated stones and other heat treatments work wonders for some women. For others, the treatments work better in cold (but not too cold, and not for too long, either, please).
* Ginger compresses, hot or cold, movement and encourage the mobilization of the body healing agents to act and to relieve your pain. I grate several ounces of fresh ginger into simmering water and cook gently for ten minutes, then soak a cloth in the liquid and use it as an application to the painful area.
* The National Institute of Health lists fibromyalgia as one of the few conditions that acupuncture can relieve.
* If an act of lying down to sleep the pain, slip into something relaxing: valerian, skullcap, or St. Joan’s wort tinctures, drops to a 1 ml of one, twice if necessary .
Step 5: Use Supplements
* A study has shown little interest from those who have fibromyalgia is taken SAM-e or 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan – a precursor of serotonin). Do not use 5-HTP if you are taking St. Joan’s / John’s wort.
* Lack of sleep can rapidly aggravate the symptoms of fibromyalgia. (See Step 0.) Confused If you sleep, melatonin at bedtime, the lowest dose you can get help in May.
Step 5b: drug use
* Oil of lavender was recommended by several women who have dealt with fibromyalgia for many years. Dilute with olive oil or jojoba and use as a rub.
* Orthodox treatment of fibromyalgia relies heavily on drugs, primarily antispasmodics, antidepressants and muscle relaxants. But Celebrex, Vioxx, Valteran, amitriptyline (Elavil), fluoxetine (Prozac), vanlafaxine (Effecor), trazadone (Desyrel), alprazolam (Xanax) and cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) can affect the liver and disrupt the system immune.
* Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen do not reduce fibromyalgia pain for most women.
* Tramadol (Ultram) is a drug that addresses both the modification of brain chemicals and the signals from the pain of those who have fibromyalgia.
Step 6: Break and Enter
* Beware of invasive diagnostic tests. Many women say sustainable endless series of tests to put a name to their pain, without success and at the cost of physical, mental and moral.
* The injection of lidocaine, a drug that temporarily numbs nerves, are effective in relieving fibromyalgia pain for some women. Injections of capsaicin (cayenne) relieve pain by destroying nerve endings.
